Man led officers on chase in stolen SUV before crashing near Destiny USA, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. — A 22-year-old man was arrested after leading officers on a short chase in a stolen SUV that crashed into another car and flipped onto its side near Destiny USA in Syracuse.
Around 6:15 p.m. Friday, Adrian Duncan was driving a stolen Ford Escape when a Flock Safety Camera — a license plate reading camera — spotted the SUV at Destiny USA, according to Kieran Coffey, a spokesperson for the Syracuse police.
Coffey said officers spotted the stolen vehicle near the mall and tried to stop the SUV, but the vehicle immediately fled. The city officers did not pursue it, he said.
An Onondaga County sheriff’s deputy patrolling in the area saw the SUV and began pursuing the car, police said.
The stolen car went a short distance before it crashed into another car on Park Street at Harborside Drive, Coffey said.
The crash flipped the stolen vehicle on its side. Police said the two occupants in the car — Duncan and Marshea Weathers, 21— sustained minor injuries from the crash.
Duncan was taken to St. Joesph’s Hospital Health Center, Coffey said.
Weathers was charged with third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, Coffey said.
Duncan was charged with third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, he said.
Both were released on appearance tickets, according to Coffey.
